Amazons as depicted in Greek Art and Mythology, are derived from a nation of warrior women, who were reputed to have lived in Scythia near the Black Sea; In the Illiad, the Amazons are one of several allies who try to prevent the fall of Troy. According to the legend, after slaying the queen of the Amazons Pentesilea during the Troyan war, the Greek hero Achilles removed her helmet and was moved to tears upon seeing her extraordinary beauty.
Chris has created some memorable Amazonian images and for many people, the archetypical Chris Achilleos image remains a tall Amazon armed with a sword or a spear. “Her costumes and her weapons, her expression, her whole posture, is all contrived to give her strength, to make her look georgous and dangerous", says Chris.
The Amazons Portfolio published in 1983, was a collection of eight Amazonian women prints. Most of the designs where originally from the 1982 Amazons Calendar.
