Art Gallery

A note about the titles - although many of Chris's images are the result of book-cover commissions, he generally prefers to give them his own titles; but there are not to be taken too seriously as their main purpose is for identification. This does not apply to Chris's glamour artwork where title are often carefully chosen and must be kept in mind when looking at the image.

Amazons as depicted in Greek Art and Mythology, are derived from a nation of warrior women, who were reputed to have lived in Scythia near the Black Sea. In the Illiad, the Amazons are one of several allies who try to prevent the fall of Troy. According to the legend, after slaying the queen of the Amazons Pentesilea during the Troyan war....

Fantasy Gallery

Following a rise in the popularity of fantasy and science fiction art in the late seventies, both in America and in Great Britain, Chris found himself flourishing as a fantasy artist. Over the years, Chris has not only illustrated dozens of bookcovers; but his art has also appeared on covers for games, video and rock albums, as well as on the front cover of many magazines...

  • Elven Warrior 1983
"The most ambitious picture I have ever done for a book cover. I painted the background like this and not in full colour as I intended it to be a tapestry showing the colaps of his civilisation and not a real background. In the new era of Man that is dawning neither he nor the dragons have a place except as figures of myth and legend." Bookcover illustration for "Elric at the End of Time", by Michael Moorcock.

  • The Once and Future King I 2003
Commissioned by the musician Gary Hughes for the wraparound and booklet artwork for his musical version of the Arthurian legend, which came in two parts and two separate boxes, this is the first painting.

Extract from an Gary Hughs Interveiw by Melodic Rock: I must also add that the artwork and overall packaging is wonderful. Tell us about how that came to be... I have known [artist] Chris Achilleos for about five years now, since Ten approached him for a potential cover for Spellbound. We have, over the years, become great friends and he is a great historian himself who loves this subject matter. I was amazed when he offered to do the artworks. He had a bad experience after his Lovehunter cover and for years he has had a policy of not working with bands anymore. He did it as a friend. The man after all is an illustrative God. He has surpassed even my greatest expectations with these two covers. He is a true gentleman and surely one of the world's greatest exponents of fantasy artwork. All Chris's originals are large scale. It is amazing to know that although we are looking at small CD sleeves, the original artworks are close to eight feet wide and five feet tall! The detail and colour are truly something to behold.

  • The Once and Future King II 2003
"The final battle shows the death of Arthur and his son, a son begotten by Arthur's incestuous union with his sister Morgana. As Morgana was the principal character behind Arthur's fall, I chose her image to loom over the battle's carnage, surrounded by the mystic runes to suggest her dark powers." Commissioned by the musician Gary Hughes for the wraparound and booklet artwork for his musical version of the Arthurian legend, which came in two parts and two separate boxes, this is the second part.
